Growing up on a military base overseas, I experienced first hand the role that American foreign policy plays not only in world affairs but also in world opinion. Our most proud principles of fairness, equality, democracy, and liberty are a beacon of good will in global relations. We must rededicate ourselves to our alliances and our principles that secured our nation in World War II, throughout the Cold War, and beyond.

Iraq War

As a student, I had the privilege of re-introducing two men joined first in war, then separated by decades of peace - an elderly Italian farmer and a returning World War Two American veteran. Through tears, the farmer pointed to an empty sack of flour hanging on his wall and said to the old soldier, "For 50 years that sack of flour you left me has stood for all that is good about America to me." We owe it to ourselves and all future meetings like this to serve our soldiers as well as they have served us and to have a clear and purposeful mission in our conflicts.

Healthcare

A few years ago, before my granddad past away, I met a nurse who cared for him everyday, looked after him, and grew to love him. Shortly after he died, I learned that this woman who had given so much to him did not have health insurance for her own family. When her son got sick, she became the face of 47 million Americans who don't have health insurance. We have a responsibility to ensure quality and affordable health care is accessible by all Americans.

Fiscal Responsibility

Like all American households, my family must "balance our checkbook" every month, and so should our national government. Currently, our government is spending more than it brings in. We have gotten away from smart spending. We must get our government's finances in order. Continuing to pass on our debt to our children is not only irresponsible, it's morally wrong.

The Economy

I have watched our nation go from a surplus and growing middle class to a nation in debt and increasingly feeling uneasy as it shifts the burden to our children. We must focus on tax relief for families as well as research and development into new areas of economic growth.
